In 1761, John Stevens, Sr. from Plainfield, Connecticut traveled to Portsmouth, NH, on behalf of fifty-six would-be proprietors. He petitioned Governor Bennington Wentworth for a grant of land. He was successful, and the Town of Plainfield, New Hampshire was founded by Charter from King George III on August 14, 1761.1 We are now preparing a celebration of our 250 years in New Hampshire.
